MASB Director since 2017, Purushottam “Purush” Papatla is Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute Professor of Marketing and Co-Director of the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute in the Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His current research is on using Bayesian methods and machine learning to understand how consumers interact with brands through Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and how those interactions influence their purchase behavior. He and his PhD students are also using Big Data to understand the Gig Economy and why consumers choose Uber over cabs, or AirBnB over hotels.
Purush works with companies through non-commercial research relationships and publishes his findings through such scholarly journals as Customer Needs and Solutions, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Interactive Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Retailing, Marketing Letters, and Marketing Science.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Osmania University in India, a Master’s in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Illinois-Chicago, and a PhD in Marketing from the Kellogg School, Northwestern University.
